STMS Club Live sells Love Bugs for charity

South Lake Tahoe Middle School Club Live has been making Valentine Love Bugs for 20 plus years. It’s a tradition to make Love Bugs during the last week of January and the first two weeks of February. We sell them to peers during our lunch hour and deliver their purchased orders to friends with a Love Bug attached by a string. The best part is that the money goes to a charity that the club selects.

What are Love Bugs you ask? Love Bugs are fluffy balls of yarn made during a long and very tedious process that involves cardboard, and a lot of scissors. Once the Love Bugs have achieved their ideal shape then we add the faces. Which include antenna, eyes, and a nose.

The Love Bugs come with a Hershey’s kiss on them for a little extra something. Selected members called ‘Cupids’ deliver the bugs on Valentine’s morning.

The money collected by sales this year is going to St. Judes Children’s Hospital. Over the previous years, we have donated our bug money to many different groups. For example, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center, Christmas Cheer, OPEN (Ordinary People meeting Extraordinary Needs), and many more. This year we sold 127 bugs, and we have made $169 to donate to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

Club Live sells Love Bugs, but our club is much more than yarn. Club Live is an after-school group that promotes a healthy lifestyle for youth. We are focused on educating people of all ages on drug and alcohol abuse. Club Live is also an accepting environment for everyone. We introduce students to leadership and other essential life skills. It’s a safe environment where everyone belongs and can be themselves. In Club Live we’re all supporting
and towards each other. For more information about Club Live please contact Mr. Larry Lambdin at South Tahoe Middle School 530-541-6404 ext. 1729.
