South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission meets Thursday: Agenda includes Tourist Core, Rental Registry

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission will be held on Thursday, February 22 at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the Lake Tahoe Airport.

Tourist Core Area Plan/Specific Plan Amendments Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration - The developer of a residential complex behind the old Raley's, adjacent to Van Sickle Bi-State Park has adjusted some of their plans to address complaints and concerns from the public, the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the California Tahoe Conservancy, and the Nevada Division of State Parks. Some parcels are currently zoned "Recreational," and the developer wants to make them "Tourist Center Mixed-Use" to add high-end housing. Public comment on the project goes through February 26. Rental Registry Ordinance - Rental registries may serve as a tool for increasing certainty, stability, and fairness in the rental market for tenants and landlords. Data and information such as rental prices, increases in rents, and tenancy duration could inform council members and staff on current housing trends to better address the existing and future needs of renters and landlords. According to the last survey, out of the current 8,882 occupied housing units, 59 percent are rentals.
General Plan Annual Progress Report, Housing Element Implementation Update, and Surplus Land Inventory for 2023 - The 2023 General Plan Annual Progress Plan includes information on the City’s progress in implementing the General Plan as well as required housing element and surplus land information.
Accessory Dwelling Unit Ordinance Amendment - Multiple new state laws regarding ADUs became effective on January 1, 2024, and those require updating of City Code Section 6.85.050. This section discusses the proposed changes to the ordinance regarding ADU size, height, and number and type allowed.
