Jackknifed truck and fuel spill into Lake Tahoe closes SR28/ SR89 around Emerald Bay also closed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At this hour both routes between the north and south shore of Lake Tahoe are closed. A jackknifed truck that was chained up and an unplowed roadway prompted the closure of SR89 around Emerald Bay early this morning, and it remains closed as of 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

SR28 near Incline Village is closed due to another jackknifed truck near mile marker 1. Nevada State Police Trooper Charles Caster said there is also a fuel spill in the area, with fuel going into the lake. At this time the amount of fuel is unknown. A tow truck had been called to the scene after the incident was first reported at 1:00 p.m. It was not equipped for the type of big rig that needed the tow and another was called. It should be there by approximately 3:00 p.m. Caster said the road will remain closed until the fuel is dealt with. Another route is recommended as it could be several hours, said Caster.

A professional hazardous waste removal company (Clean Harbors) is on the way to SR28. They are en route to clean up the spill.

A crash on I-80 closed lanes earlier this afternoon but they have since reopened.

Use caution as there is a lot of ice under the snow that fell overnight, leaving slick roads.
