UPDATE: NWS Reno says the incoming storm has picked up in intensity, bringing with it the potential for blizzard conditions across the Sierra Nevada. Because of this, they have issued a Blizzard Warning for Lake Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra starting at 10 a.m. Monday, through 4 a.m. Wednesday. During this period, total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet, except 4 to 6 feet above 7000 feet are expected. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph with over 100 mph along Sierra ridgetops.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Winter continues to have its hold on the Sierra with another wave of stormy weather entering the Lake Tahoe Basin Sunday. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until 4 a.m. Wednesday.
This significant winter storm possesses a combination of a cold air mass, sufficient moisture, strong winds, instability, and dynamic forcing to produce heavy Sierra snowfall with periods of blizzard conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
NWS Reno says to expect zero visibility at times, particularly in the Monday
afternoon through Tuesday afternoon period. Wind gusts over 50 mph across Sierra communities and over 100 mph across Sierra ridges are possible.
Snowfall through this period could be upwards of 4 to 6 feet along the Sierra crest with 2 to 3 feet for communities in the Tahoe Basin and eastern Sierra communities west of US-395 in Mono County.
We'll have to wait and see if folklore is correct - "If the weather at the start of March was bad (roaring, like a roaring lion), the month should end with good weather (gentle, like a lamb)."
