South Lake Tahoe forecast: Blizzard could drop 2-3 feet of snow at lake level, up to 6 feet at upper elevations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin until Monday morning at 11 a.m., and then a Blizzard Warning takes over and is in place until 4 a.m. Wednesday.

From the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno: For the Winter Storm Warning, heavy snow is expected. Expect total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, except 10 to 20 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. For the Blizzard Warning, blizzard conditions are expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet, except 4 to 6 feet above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph with over 100 mph along Sierra ridgetops. Waves 2 to 5 feet on Lake Tahoe.

We`ll warm up a little bit Thursday through Saturday, though it will still

around 10 degrees below average. The quiet pattern won`t last long as another system will be knocking on the door. This next wave could move through the region as early as midday Saturday.

The South Lake Tahoe forecast from NWS Reno:

Monday - Snow, mainly after 11 am. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 27. Breezy, with a south wind of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches is possible.

Monday Night - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 11. Breezy, with a southwest wind of around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches is possible.

Tuesday - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 27. Windy, with a southwest wind 20 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible.

Tuesday Night - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 8. Breezy, with a southwest wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 15 to 20 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches is possible.

Wednesday - A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 24. West wind 10 to 15 mph becoming north in the afternoon. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible.

Thursday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 40.
