Explosion and fire causes extensive damage at South Lake Tahoe home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A brand new home in Meyers exploded on Thursday afternoon, sending flames and smoke into the sky. There were multiple 911 calls to emergency dispatch as neighbors saw the fire and heard the explosion.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded to the home on Piute Street, finding it fully engulfed. Several trucks and engines from LVFPD were at the scene, and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was also called in to assist.

The closest fire hydrant was covered in snow, and it took firefighters and a team of neighbors with shovels about 20 minutes to get it dug out, said LVFPD Captain Martin Goldberg.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the home suffered extensive damage. Southwest Gas is doing an investigation as well.

One engine will stay on the scene on fire watch.

Construction on the home was recently finished and it is listed for sale at $1,525,000.

At this time there is no other information.
