SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School Girls Varsity Basketball team has just wrapped up an amazing season. Starting with winning a tournament at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy in Rocklin, the girls' varsity team finished as co-champs of Northern Nevada 3A West division for the first time since 1990.
They entered the postseason as the #1 west seed as they headed into the regional tournament. In the playoffs, they lost to Fernley by just a bucket, 39-41.
Junior guard Ivy Gonzalez was named League MVP and earned first-team for the state. She lead the league in many statistics, but everyone that watched said it was her grit, determination, and love of the game that made her a star.
Putting the word "team" in teamwork, the varsity team excelled in supporting and encouraging each other all season under coaches Mike Neiger, Cheryl Vanos Embry, and Tyler Pakes.
This is exemplified in all of the other honors these girls received.
Senior Alexi Haven - First-Team All-league
Junior Kiva Davis - Second-Team All-league
Sophomore Addie Menke - Honorable Mention
Freshman Campbell Matthews - Honorable Mention
Alexi Haven and Kiva Davis also earned Honorable Mention at the state level.
The coach also earned honors with Head Coach Mike Neiger earning Coach of the Year.
The Vikings finished the season with a league record of 8-2.
With only two seniors graduating (congratulations Alexi Haven and Sage Smith), STHS Girl's Basketball has a bright future in the years to come. The team wants to thank all the fans, community members, students, and families who supported this team.
