South Lake Tahoe man dies in two-car collision on US50 at Ice House Road

An 83-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has been identified as the person who was killed in a collision on US50 near Ice House Road on Thursday afternoon.

Marvin H. Buchmiller, a long-time advocate for mentally and emotionally challenged members of the South Lake Tahoe community, died after another vehicle crossed into opposing lanes, hitting Buchmiller's Kia Sportage.

Buchmiller had a 52-year-old passenger in his vehicle. That man, who is unidentified, was hospitalized with major injuries. Buchmiller was eastbound heading home after taking his passenger to a doctor's appointment.

CHP said the 52-year-old driver of the other vehicle, a Ford Expedition, was treated for minor injuries. It is not clear at this time why the Ford driver crossed into the path of Buchmiller's vehicle. All three people involved were wearing seatbelts and DUI is not suspected in this crash.

There have not been any arrests at this point. CHP is still investigating.

For many years Buchmiller was the man responsible for placing many of the challenged members of the community into job opportunities at businesses like Safeway, other grocery stores, and the casinos. He advocated for them, trained them, and was their cheerleader. His clients were those with an IQ of 70 or less, and many had never held jobs until Marvin worked with them.

Buchmiller'd death has been heartbreaking to the community, and his decades of tirelessly working on behalf of people with disabilities will be missed.
