SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain Resort will be closed on Friday, March 10 due to the incoming atmospheric river storm system. This system will impact South Lake Tahoe through the weekend and into next week, so there may be further operation issues.
Both the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County has issued emergency proclamations and Heavenly said they want to do their part and support the community during the emergency situation.
"We expect major challenges as a result of inbound precipitation, both at our resort and across the Tahoe region, so we are making this decision proactively out of an abundance of caution for our employees and guests
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is forecasting a warm storm that will bring heavy snow at high elevations, heavy rain at lower elevations (including lake level), extreme winds, and low visibility.
"This will lead to ice on the roads, rime ice on lifts, operational difficulties, and overall dangerous conditions - including the potential
of downed trees, flooding at lower elevations, and more," added Heavenly. "Our team will be working on-site where we can safely keep up with the challenges on the mountain and prepare for when we can reopen."
The resort will be assessing conditions day-by-day to ensure the safest decisions are made when it comes to operations. They expect recovery from the storm to take some time.
Heavenly will update its plans for Saturday during the day on Friday.
"We appreciate your understanding, and stay safe," said Heavenly in its statement.
