SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Middle School Club Live volunteers recently cleared fire hydrants in South Lake Tahoe. On February 11 at 10 a.m., Club Live volunteers cleared fire hydrants around the school.
Club Live is a school club that encourages kids to lead a healthy lifestyle. During meetings Club Live often will have a game to get everyone up, moving, and socializing. The club also teaches kids about the threat of smoking, vaping, and drinking irresponsibly.
So, why did Club Live clear fire hydrants around the school?
They did it to protect the middle school and other buildings around it. If a building is on fire and the fire hydrant is buried, then the fire department will have to spend valuable time clearing off the fire hydrant before they can put out the fires. Sometimes the fire hydrant has ice around it, which would take them even longer. Digging out the fire hydrants helps to prevent more damage from fire to the buildings around it.
On February 11, Club Live volunteers met in the middle school’s room 4 to plan out in what order they were going to dig them out. Then, they split into two groups. The first group went to check on a fire hydrant near the front of the school and dig out another, while the second group went to dig out a fire hydrant by the softball fields. The first group finished digging out the fire hydrant quickly, making a path to it from the road for easy access. Then, they set out for the last fire hydrant near a bus stop.
When the second group finished, they met up with the first group at the fire hydrant near a bus stop. The first group was having a bit of trouble finding it when a member of the second group spotted it in a pocket of snow. After a while, a stranger pulled to the side of the road and got out a chainsaw to cut the ice that had formed around the fire hydrant. After a victorious day, the two groups went back to the Club Live room to have some pizza and celebrate.
