Never ending winter at Lake Tahoe - Storm warning, storm watch, rain, snow in the forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first day of spring is on March 20, and even though we normally experience some snow in March, it often comes after many breaks in the cold weather and glimpses of warmth.

Plan on periods of gusty winds, rain, and snow today into early Monday. After a brief break, a second weather system will move into the region Tuesday and Wednesday with additional Sierra snowfall and mountain travel impacts. Rain and snow are forecast for Lake Tahoe and western Nevada with snow accumulations possible Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place until Monday morning at 11 a.m., then a Winter Storm Warning is from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday. For the Winter Storm Watch, heavy snow is possible with total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches, except 8 to 18 inches above 7000 feet possible.

The simulations of the storm are keeping the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno on its toes, with a slower-moving track and the potential for more intense rain and snow bands. The storm had been tracking south with Alpine and Mono Counties getting the bulk of the system, but that can change with the speed of the system.

NWS Reno says additional waves of precipitation are possible through the weekend, but timing and intensity have yet to be determined. Sadly they said there is no sign of a drying or warming trend for now.
