SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow cleared in time for the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Lady Vikings to win both their Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer games Friday, the second week for both teams to come out on top.
The STHS JV played a game against North Tahoe and won 2-0. Giulia Lancellotti scored a goal from a direct kick, and Olivia Kwachak Hall scored off a steal. Molly Adams and her backline earned their first shutout, said Coach Julia Russell.
Varsity took on Hug at their first home game of the modified season.
"It was the most fantastic feeling, full of nostalgia and excitement, to be in our stadium with our Viking family," said Russell.
The team started aggressively and scored their first goal in the second minute of play. That score came as Kelsey Hogan delivered a cross to Giovana DeLoia, who finished off the volley to hit the back of the net.
After spending the majority of the first half in front of Hug’s goal, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
When play resumed, Anjelina Maltase was fouled in the box and earned an assist in the form of a penalty kick. Kelsey Hogan converted the kick to a goal in the 42nd minute of play.
The game finished with a 3rd and final goal - a perfectly placed corner kick by Kelsey to Giovana who took a shot that was deflected off the goalie to Jenna Pevenage, who scored the goal.
Senior Goalie Phoebe Barkann had 3 saves, and her backline including seniors Mya Rossi, Hannia Medina Acosta, and Olivia Russell, as well as Jenna Pevenage, Ella Bickert, Emma Terrell, Indie Newberry, Carmen Hardin, and goalie Bella Stowell, earned another shutout giving up zero goals so far this season.
In the other two STHS Varsity games so far this season, the Vikings beat Sparks 9-0 and Wooster 4-0. The lead the league, followed by North Valleys 1-0-1 and Hug 2-2-1.
