NDOT Incline Village and Tahoe road projects planned

Tahoe's record-breaking winter has been impactful to homes, businesses as well as the roadways.

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) snowplow operators work in extremely inclement weather and mountainous terrain to help keep roads safe and clear. During storms, crews break into two separate 12-hour shifts, rotating shifts to cover snow removal 24 hours a day. With this season's 500-600 inches of snowfall, crews dedicated more than 88,000 hours to removing snow across northwestern Nevada.

And all that winter weather means more potholes. Potholes typically form in winter freeze-thaw conditions, when the frozen water expands into existing cracks in the roadway surface, leading to potholes as cars and trucks pass over the weak spot in the road.

NDOT currently has seven permanent highway personnel dedicated to the maintenance of State Route 28 and U.S. 50 on Tahoe’s east shore.

As part of NDOT's commitment to public safety, highway maintenance staff perform more than 75 critical road maintenance duties – from maintaining and updating roadway striping and incident response to snow and ice removal and pothole repairs. Crews are undertaking urgent pothole repairs as soon as snow removal and other immediate highway activities are complete.

As soon as weather permits, the construction project will resume for permanent repairs of the asphalt roadway will on SR28 and the lower section of SR431 not paved last season. The entire asphalt surface will be milled down four inches and new asphalt placed in the project area. This will effectively eliminate pothole reoccurrence for many years.

The Nevada Department of Transportation and Q&D Construction's SR 431-28 Tahoe Project is a multi-year highway improvement project that will revitalize and enhance the existing roadways and utility/drainage systems helping preserve pavement and protect Lake Tahoe.

Drivers can expect reduced speeds through the work zone and up to 30-minute delays. Construction operations are weather dependent and subject to change.
