Highway 89 around Emerald Bay now open

It took several weeks and challenges with storms and snow slides, but Caltrans crews have been able to get SR89 open around Emerald Bay.

The road opened over the weekend though there were two small slides both to the north and south of the Emerald Bay portion of the highway. They were quickly cleared and the road never closed though there were chain controls Monday morning due to the snow.

As of Monday night, the road is open and free of controls. Several sections of temporary k-rail were put down to replace damaged guard rail on the Eagle Falls Viaduct and elsewhere through the area.

SR89 is closed at the south end of Markleeville due to a mudslide, and access to the town is still possible from Woodfords.

Another road that has been causing motorists issues this winter is US395. It remains closed from Lee Vining to the junction of SR167 in Mono County due to snow and snowslide debris. There is one-way controlled traffic from 1.4 miles north to 1.8 miles north of the junction of SR89, also in Mono County due to storm repairs.

Always checkroad conditions before traveling as the current weather isn't the only thing determining current conditions. Check out https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ before hitting the road.
