South Lake Tahoe City Council to hold evening meeting Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To start their April 4 meeting off, the South Lake Tahoe City Council will hear a presentation from Keep Tahoe Blue regarding the City's Polystyrene Ordinance and the non-profit's outreach efforts.

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Expanded Polystyrene (EPS or Styrofoam) Ordinance has been in effect since 2018 and the current updates are in effect as of January 1, 2023. This ordinance prohibits the use of EPS food and drink containers by food providers and retailers in the City and requires that single-use plastic containers and related food service ware items be made available only on request. This includes cups, bowls, plates, trays, cartons, clamshell containers, cup lids, utensils (forks, knives, spoons, and sporks), chopsticks, straws, stirrers, and plastic condiment cups and packets. Grocery stores and retailers cannot sell disposable foam coolers, cups, plates, bowls, and packing peanuts, including meat, fish, and food trays prepared or packed outside of South Lake Tahoe.

Keep Tahoe Blue will point out there are plenty of affordable, compliant, and environmentally friendly alternatives out there, and will share a letter they have drafted with the City to South Lake Tahoe business owners. Included with the letter is a guide to help them find alternatives to plastics.

Also on the agenda is a vote on the termination of the "Proclamation of Local Emergency" due to the recent severe winter storms, and a motion on the new Master Fee Schedule.

The meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is also scheduled to see a vote on an agreement with Design Workshop for the preparation of the Mid-Town Area Plan for an amount not to exceed $598,697. The City is undertaking the development of the Mid-Town Area Plan to guide future land uses and development to meet the needs of residents, businesses, visitors, and
the environment. Design Workshop was selected by a selection committee to assist in developing the area plan and leading the planning effort. The boundaries of this area are in the photo above.
