South Lake Tahoe students honored by Daughters of American Revolution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two high school seniors were honored by the South Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) during a ceremony on Monday.

Friends and family gathered at Champions Plaza in South Lake Tahoe to watch Sierrah Meek and Kaitlyn Ponce receive the DAR Citizenship Award. The young women were selected for their leadership, dependability, loyalty and service.

Sierrah will graduate from Mt. Tallac High School in June with plans to continue her education at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). She would like to become a registered nurse while also studying psychology.

Kaitlyn graduated early in January and also plans to attend LTCC before heading onto four-year college once she decides her major.

DAR members presented Sierrah nd Kaitlyn with gifts including flags that flew over the U.S. Capitol on February 5, 2021. That date is the anniversary of the local chapter becoming part of the national group.

The South Lake Tahoe DAR chapter was chartered on February 5, 2019. They focus on community and national service in the areas of:
- Historic Preservation - Al Tahoe Historic Cemetery, preservation of family histories
- Education - literacy, path to U.S. Citizenship (Naturalization), American History education and essay contest, genealogy workshops
- Patriotic Endeavor - respect for the U.S. Flag, support for active military personnel and veterans, DAR Good Citizen Award at high school level, 4th of July Parade and other patriotic observances, Stand Downs, Constitution education
Chapter membership is open to any woman, age 18 and older, who can document her bloodline descent from an American Revolutionary War Patriot.
