Lake Tahoe Earth Week - Climate Action Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Lake Tahoe Earth Week is from April 19 - 23, 2021. This year's daily challenges continue with Climate Action Tuesday. In Tahoe, we are seeing the effects of global climate change firsthand with increased wildfire frequency and intensity and reduced snowpack. Ever wonder how your actions impact our changing climate? Celebrate Earth Week by completing these easy activities to reduce your carbon footprint.

Calculate Your Carbon Footprint - A carbon footprint calculates how much greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) are generated by our actions and lifestyle. The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world (source: nature.org). Head to takecaretahoe.org to calculate your carbon footprint and see if there are any changes you can make to lower your global impact.

Eat a Vegetarian Meal - Tahoe is home to a plethora of wonderful restaurants with great vegetarian options. Support a local restaurant or try a new vegetarian recipe at home. By replacing meat and dairy with protein-filled plant-based options such as nuts, beans, and lentils, you can help reduce the amount of water, land, and other natural resources used to produce your meal.

Sign-up for the Tahoe Bike Challenge – Vehicles that run on gasoline or diesel release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, into the atmosphere. When you ride your bike, it is better for you and the planet! Register today for the 16th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge at https://www.lovetoride.net/tahoe! Ride your bike and win prizes from Tahoe local businesses throughout the month of June. Last year over 300 Tahoe residents and visitors took the challenge and biked 45,442 miles, a distance just shy of circling the Earth twice.

Write to Your Representative or Newspaper – Let your elected representatives know that climate change is important to you and how you would like them to vote on climate-related policies. You can also send a postcard to the President or submit articles to local newspapers to educate your community about how they can help act to make Tahoe more resilient to climate change. Your voice matters!
