Celebrate Earth Week in Tahoe with Trash-Free Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — In anticipation of Earth Day, locals and visitors are invited to take part in Trash-Free Thursday, one of a week-long series of themed days to ring in #EarthWeekTahoe.

As spring rolls in, melting snow reveals a winter’s worth of litter. Tahoe’s world-renowned natural beauty and delicate ecology don’t play well with to-go food waste, single-use plastics, and shattered sleds left on sidewalks, trails, and outdoor recreation spots. Tahoe lovers are encouraged to pitch in to Keep Tahoe Blue for Trash-Free Thursday with these self-paced and group activities.

Join the League to Save Lake Tahoe for a Community Litter Cleanup – The event takes place at Heavenly Village on Tahoe’s south shore from 8:00 am to noon on Friday, April 21. Visit keeptahoeblue.org/earthday to reserve your spot, learn what to bring, and get a glimpse of what’s in store for the morning.

Tidy Up Your Tahoe Happy Place – A great way to celebrate Earth Week is by picking up trash in your neighborhood, favorite outdoor location, or a hot spot you have seen around the Tahoe Basin. You can clean up any day, any time, anywhere! If you plan your own litter clean up, make sure to wear safety gloves as you give Tahoe some tender, love, and care.

Report your litter data and beta test the new Citizen Science Tahoe App! Download the free app and report what you removed in the “That’s Not Natural” survey. Your observations help scientists and advocates find solutions to Tahoe’s environmental threats. The app is in a testing phase – you can help make sure it’s perfect! For any questions or concerns, please contact app@keeptahoeblue.org.

Reduce Waste – Do your part to keep litter out of Tahoe. Use reusable containers when packing lunches to cut down on single-use plastics. Take newspapers, cardboard, bottles, cans, and plastic containers to Tahoe Refuse locations. When cleaning, swap out paper towels and single-use wipes for cloths you can wash and reuse. What other ways can you reduce waste at home?
