Senior Scam Workshop to be held in South Lake Tahoe as first in series of programs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Scams are on the increase across the country, and many of the victims are senior citizens. South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are not immune to scams, and to better help protect seniors, a workshop will beheld called "Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Project (EDAAP)
Scam Workshop."

On May 4 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, David Groth will show people how to spot a scam, and teach participants the most common scams happening

in the county and the most effective ways to protect yourself.

Groth is formerly with the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office and is now a social worker with the county's Adult Protective Services.

The growing number of scams targeting all people are on the rise, but thoe targeting senior citizens have been targeting a population that wasn't using the internet as frequently until the pandemic. More common scams are the kidnapping or arrest of a grandchild, taking computers hostage with a ransom, fake inheritance, sweepstakes or lottery winnings, and requests from government agencies like the IRS. Seniors are also targeted in romance scams.

This is the first in a series of workshops at the SLT Senior Center, all held from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. Pre-registration is suggested but not required.

Learn your legal rights and responsibilities of a health care and/or financial agent, including many other responsibilities associated with the health and well being of your loved one. May 18 - El Dorado County Information and Assistance Program. Information and Assistance (I&A) informs, guides and links older adults and their families to services in the community that meet their unique needs. Presenter: Jordan Brushia, Program Coordinator, El Dorado County Senior Services

May 25 - El Dorado County Commission on Aging. The Commission on Aging (COA) is an advisory Committee to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. The Commission works with the Director of the Area Agency on Aging on community interests and issues faced by seniors in El Dorado County.
