Forest Service announces some 2022 recreation opening dates for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has begun the process of opening National Forest recreational sites, roads, and gates in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Weather and conditions permitting, anticipated recreation site opening dates can be found under the Recreation Conditions Report heading at go.usa.gov/xwXAf. Roads and gates typically begin opening on dates listed in the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) at go.usa.gov/xHwSe.

Before recreation sites, roads and gates can fully open to the public, the LTBMU must hire seasonal crews and staff, clean up from winter, remove safety hazards and wait for the danger of a freeze to pass before turning on water systems.

National Forest visitors should always exercise caution and stay aware of their surroundings as they enjoy the outdoors. Hazards to watch for include trees that may have recently died due to drought impacts, disease, or beetle infestation and/or have sustained damage over the winter, including broken limbs and/or damaged trunks.

Keep in mind, that recreation area grounds are open year-round, but until sites officially open, there is no parking, trash removal, or restroom facilities available. Be sure to pack out all trash and where pets are allowed, and always clean up after them. Until parking lots open, park vehicles off the roadway, avoid parking on vegetation, and do not block access gates.
