South Lake Tahoe Campground by the Lake opens, changes due to new recreation center

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Campground by the Lake opened for the season on May 6 for camping, with some changes in store for those using the facility.

Campground by the Lake is accepting reservations for loops D, E, & F on the southwest end of the campground for the 2022 season. They will not be opening reservations to loops A, B, portions of C, and tent cabin village due to the construction of the new Recreation and Aquatics Center.

ALL campsites will be impacted by daytime construction noise, no matter what site is selected. Before making your reservation for 2022, all campers are hereby notified of construction noise and other construction-related impacts they may experience during your stay. Due to advance notification of the impacts on the camping experience, no refunds will be issued due to noise.

Camping in 2022 will be dry, as there are no electric or water hookups. At this time there are no sites with electric hookups or water hookups available. All sites are considered dry sites. Water is available at the campground entrance and a few community (shared) water spigots are located in each loop.

At this time, charcoal and propane are allowed for BBQ cooking, and wood campfires are allowed in the designated campfire rings. When basin-wide fire restrictions go into place, the campground will also be restricted to no campfires and no charcoal BBQs.

The campground is monitored by City staff to make sure everyone is responsible with their charcoal and campfires.

If it is a Red Flag Day, no flames of any kind are allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin, including the campground. The National Weather Service determines red flag days. All fire stations around the lake will have large red flags flying out in front when it is a Red Flag Day and notifications are sent out through press releases and social media.

As always, open wood burning is never allowed at residences inside the City limits.
