STATELINE, Nev. - Matt Grime has been working at the Fox & Hound at Lake Tahoe since before he could drive, and before graduating from Whittell High School in 1999. When his dad Harvey opened the place in 1991, little did Matt know he and Harvey would be partners in the same business 33 years later.
Harvey had successfully operated other bars in South Lake Tahoe and Zephyr Cove starting in the 1970s before the Fox & Hound - the Bitter Creek, Sam's Place, the Thirsty Duck, and the Shoals.
Since Matt took over operations after graduating with a degree in business from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005, he has concentrated more on the food end of business.
He added a small smoker in 2010 for ribs, then he was encouraged to enter them in Rib Cookoff. Matt and the Fox & Hound won "People's Choice" in their first contest in Carson City, and they quietly racked up twelve trophies for best ribs, best sauce, and people's choice. It's been a few years since they've entered rib contests but you can find their rib trailer at the Genoa Candy Dance and they cater many events.
"I've been focusing on growing business, enjoying Tahoe and family," said Matt who was married last September (to Jessica - remember the Super Bowl ticket party favors?). His daughter Ali is in 7th grade at Whittell High School.
The clientele at Fox & Hound is a nice mix of locals and visitors, said Matt. They get ski business when nearby Heavenly is open, then people coming and going from a day on the lake, people getting off work, out for a hike, staying at The Ridge or one of the other timeshares in the area, or those just wanting to stop by for a great view and meal. The outside deck will be open for the season soon.
It has also become a place for jackpots. They paid out $20,000 to a winning jackpot this week, and last month another $20,000 jackpot was won.
The menu has grown over the years. There is a gluten-free and vegan menu, along with ribs, burgers, tri-tip, and pulled pork, among other appetizing features.
The Fox & Hound is located at 237 Tramway Dr, Stateline, Nevada, and they are open Sunday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. - midnight, and Friday-Saturday 8:30 a.m.- 2 a.m. For menus and more information, visit https://foxandhoundtahoe.com/.
