Former South Lake Tahoe fire chief expands narcotics tracking company

After more than two decades in the fire service including leading the Lake Tahoe region through evacuation and recovery during the 2021 Caldor Fire, former South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Clive Savacool is now focusing on his narcotics-tracking software company, LogRx. The downloadable app allows agencies to quickly scan and record controlled drugs used in the field, satisfying federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requirements.

“As a career paramedic and chief Officer in the fire industry, I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t,” said Clive Savacool, Founder/CEO of LogRx. “Many agencies – large and small – still use pen and paper narcotic log books making them more vulnerable to theft, loss, and waste of controlled substances.”

LogRx was originally created for emergency responders and quickly gained interest from other industries using controlled substances. LogRx makes any Android or Apple device a scanner and GPS tracker so every narcotic is logged in real-time and then saved to secure cloud servers. Customers now range from ski patrol teams to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“It’s exciting to see how LogRx is being used in many applications that we didn’t imagine when we launched the company,” said Savacool. “Our customers now range from veterinarians to law enforcement agencies that use drugs to train their K9 units.”

Heartland Medical Direction has witnessed the effectiveness of LogRx replacing controlled substance logbooks with the app in 2019 for more than 20 EMS agencies.

“Tracking narcotics had become an onerous task,” said Dr. Bill Worden, Medical Director at Heartland Medical Direction. “LogRx has made our narcotics accountability a much easier process for both the field medics as well as administrative staff and makes our compliance with our state agencies much better.”

Savacool’s fire service career began in 1996 at Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. He became a paramedic firefighter in 1999 and moved through the ranks to become one of the youngest Battalion Chiefs in agency history. As Fire Chief at South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, he is credited with securing permanent funding to keep the city’s fire stations open, laying the groundwork for GPS-based dispatching, vaccinating 20 percent of the population against COVID-19, and leading the city’s 24,000 residents through the 2021 Caldor Fire.

Savacool created LogRx in 2016 with Co-Founder Skye Thompson, an experienced start-up business leader. Thompson led the team that designed Tablet Command–mobile incident command software. Thompson’s high-level business operations background combined with Savacool’s EMS industry experience makes them a highly qualified leadership team guiding LogRx and helping new clients implement the automated narcotic tracking system.
