Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe opens for 77th season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1946, the Tahoe Trout Farm has been providing fishing experiences for both South Lake Tahoe visitors and locals. They open for the 2023 season on Saturday, May 13.

The first delivery of trout arrived this past week. They are normally able to get the gates open before now, but the heavy snowfall put many things in the Sierra behind.

Owners Jim and Jackie Vallier, long-time locals, bought the property in 2012 to make sure its historic fishing spot stayed so more generations could enjoy what is a family tradition to many.

This year, Trout Creek is flooding into the meadow adjacent to the Tahoe Trout Farm, and Jim is watching it as it gets closer to his fishing ponds. Once the water goes back within the banks of the creek, they can start ordering more fish to be stocked into the two ponds.

During an average season, the Valliers order about 2,000 to 2,500 pounds of trout every two weeks from another long-time family business, Mount Lassen Trout Farm which is a private aquaculture facility open since 1949.
