Man who fled to Mexico after sexual assault of minor in Douglas County sentenced to 20 years

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office (DA) and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) tried for six years to have Ricardo Serrano Perez extradited to Nevada after the sexual assault of a minor. They were successful on October 9, 2023, and today Serrano Perez was sentenced to 20 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Perez was sentenced under a guilty plea agreement where the parties stipulated a maximum sentence of 20 years, according to District Attorney Mark Jackson. The minimum parole eligibility is eight years.

DCSO investigated the whereabouts of Perez after he fled the country when the sexual assault was reported. The DA worked in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice to extradite Perez from Mexico.

During sentencing on May 14, 2024, Perez admitted he “lost [his] mind.”

The DA's office presented the impact statement to the victim and noted that the victim has had to wait for this day for more than seven years because Perez fled the country. "The victim has had to rise above the impact of this crime and was left abandoned by her family after Perez’ conduct," said the DA.

Upon any release from prison, Perez will be subject to lifetime supervision and registration as a sex offender.

A presentence investigation was conducted by the Division of Parole and Probation in preparation for the sentencing of Perez, and the Division found that according to the Department of Homeland Security, United States Immigration and Customs, records indicate that Perez has an outstanding warrant of removal pending with LC.E.

The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office said they commend its law enforcement partners in efforts to bring Perez to justice and end this chapter for the victim.
