City Council holds night meeting Tuesday - topics include cannabis ordinance update, police advisory commission

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council will hold another night meeting on Tuesday, May 18 in order to involve more members of the public. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be held remotely. Instructions on how to participate are at the end of this story.

This week's agenda includes:

Certificates of Appreciation - Heroes of COVID: City Council will honor “Heroes of COVID” and issue Certificates of Appreciation to community members, City employees, stakeholders, or other persons who have directly improved the lives, businesses, and future of our community throughout this pandemic.

Proclamation - Mental Health Awareness Month: The City Council recognizes that each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider, organization and citizen, shares the burden of mental health problems and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts. The City Council calls upon our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health, share steps our citizens can take to protect their mental health, and express the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health conditions.

City Council will consider establishing a Police Advisory Commission. Optional Motions: 1) Pass a Motion creating a Police Advisory Commission: and, 2) Pass
a Resolution regarding City Commissions and Boards, including the establishment, structure, duties, qualifications, and responsibilities of a Police Advisory Commission.

Proposed Amendments to Cannabis Ordinance: Requested Action / Suggested Motions: Receive report and provide direction to the Cannabis Subcommittee and staff regarding recommended amendments to the cannabis ordinance to 1) allow retailers to include on-site consumption; 2) allow permittees to hold multiple permits, except for retail permits; and 3) increase the maximum canopy size for cultivation permits from 5,000 sq. ft. to 24,000 sq. ft. City Council is also asked to provide direction on whether the City should revisit a cannabis tax.

One-Time Allocation of $100,000 of the Cannabis Community Benefit Fee Revenue to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Building Campaign and Establishing a Policy for Future Allocations. Requested Action / Suggested Motions: Pass a Resolution authorizing the allocation of the Cannabis Community Benefit Fee revenue to the Boys and Girls Club for building completion in an amount of $100,000, amending the 2020/2021 Operating Budget and establishing a policy for future allocations.
