Former Truckee resident, who was a UC Davis and Olympic veterinarian, sentenced for tax evasion

Former Truckee resident Jack Ray Snyder, 63, now of Wellington, Florida, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb to six months in prison, six months home detention and a $30,000 fine for tax evasion, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Snyder was also ordered to pay $134,497 in restitution. He faced a possible five years in prison and $100,000 per each of the eight counts in the original indictment.

According to court documents, Snyder underreported his income in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and deducted items that were not deductible between 2011 and 2014, resulting in an additional tax liability of approximately $134,497. During these years Snyder was the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis's Center for Equine Health and was known around the world as a prominent equine surgeon. In 2014 the university sued the former professor for making more than $1 million in outside income while working for the school. The university claimed the money should have gone to them, and that Snyder went to great lengths to hide it.

He pleaded guilty in 2020.

At the time of the eight-count indictment in 2018, Snyder was living in Truckee. In 2008, Snyder was the veterinarian for the Beijing Olympics.
