Head-on collision between motorcycles leaves one man dead, other injured near Red Lake

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A head-on collision between two motorcycles has resulted in the death of a 50-year-old man from Hayward, Calif.

On Monday, May 27 at approximately 5 p.m., Marcus Canizales was riding his 2007 Harley Davidson V-Rod west on SR-88, near Red Lake, at approximately 65-70 MPH. Heading east was a 2007 BMW K1200 GT motorcycle driven by a 52-year-old Gardnerville, Nev. man, also at 65-70 mph.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said witness statements indicated the Harley Davidson made an unsafe pass across solid double yellow lines and entered the path of the BMW motorcycle. A head-on collision occurred which fully ejected both parties.

Canizales sustained major head trauma and was pronounced deceased on-scene.

The Gardnerville man sustained major injuries and was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, according to CHP. Both riders were wearing helmets.

South Lake Tahoe CHP officers Bushey, Dellinger, Moore, Stumbaugh, Renk, and Sergeant Braaksma responded. Alpine County Sheriff's Office Sergeant McKone, Deputy Baker, and Deputy Turner responded. Sergeant Braaksma assumed supervisory duties, took photos, and notified Lt. Crangle.

Officer Bushey is investigating the collision. Friendly Tow responded and stored the vehicles. The roadway was cleared at approximately 7 p.m. ACSO handled coroner responsibilities and family notifications.
