Public invited to provide feedback on Cascade to Meeks Trail

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The State Route 89 Corridor Management plan was completed in 2020 after a 2-year process that engaged key stakeholders, land managers, and the public. The plan outlines a vision and a set of goals that address everything from traffic congestion to public access to environmental protections along State Route 89.

The need to create a walking and biking trail from the area of Cascade Lake to Meeks Bay, through Emerald Bay, was identified as a top priority in the Corridor Management Plan. As Lake Tahoe continues to experience increased visitation, transportation solutions are important investments in sustainable recreation and communities.

The Cascade to Meeks Trail Feasibility Study is the first project that has come as a direct result of the Corridor Management Plan. Once complete, the study will identify the preferred routes for the trail, access points, and a cost/feasibility analysis.

The quantitative analysis step for the Cascade to Meeks segment of the West Shore Tahoe Trail is now complete. The evaluation criteria were updated based on public input gathered through a series of public meetings, an online survey, and various phone and email communication. The locations within the six corridor segments that had more than one alignment option have now been ranked utilizing the updated evaluation criteria. Detailed information about the evaluation criteria, quantitative analysis, scores and ranked alignments can now be found on the website.

To allow stakeholders to participate in the portions of the corridor they are most passionate about, TRPA will be holding a series of three virtual informational meetings to provide more detail about the ranked alignments and next steps.

Each of the three meetings will be focused on two of the six trail segments identified for the Corridor as noted below:

Meeting #1: Meeks Bay and Rubicon Segments June 6, noon-1 p.m.

Meeting #2: Paradise Flat and DL Bliss State Park Segments June 8, noon-1 p.m.

Meeting #3: Emerald Bay State Park and Spring Creek/Cascade Lake Segments June 16, noon-1 p.m.
