Proposition 42: Results Showing Voters Approve More Protection to Open Meeting Law

By 10 p.m. Tuesday, the counted votes were showing a large percentage approving a measure to give greater protection to the state’s open meeting and public records laws by putting them in the state Constitution.

Proposition 42 requires local government compliance with laws providing for public access to local government body meetings and records of government officials.

The state previously had to pay for compliance but the related costs have now been passed to local governments. It has been estimated that this will save the state tens of millions of dollars each year by shifting the costs to local governments.

The measure had over 60% "Yes" vote with 20% of the state's precincts reporting.
