Tahoe Conservancy meeting to cover Motel 6 status, Bijou Park, and New Zealand mudsnails

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next meeting of the California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) Board will be on Thursday, June 20 at 9:30 a.m. in the Lisa Maloff Center at Lake Tahoe Community College. They will also broadcast the meeting virtually via Zoom.

The agenda:

Consideration and possible authorization to accept and expend up to $900,000 and enter all necessary agreements to plan the Knox Johnson and Motel 6 Restoration Project.

Possible adoption of the Conservancy’s Strategic Plan, 2024-2029. Chairman Serrell Smokey of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California will speak about the Strategic Plan during the presentation.

Consideration and possible authorization of a grant of up to $220,000 to the League to Save Lake Tahoe to support the Washoe Tribal Liaison position.

Discussion of the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, a collaborative effort among public and private partners to prevent, detect, and control aquatic invasive species at Lake Tahoe.

Consideration and possible authorization of a grant to the Tahoe Resource Conservation District for up to $150,000 to conduct New Zealand mudsnail surveillance activities in the nearshore of Lake Tahoe.

Bijou Park Creek Watershed Restoration Project license agreements and easement with the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Consideration and possible authorization of program expenditures of up to $3,150,300 for fiscal year 2024/25.

The Board will tour sites in South Lake Tahoe. The tour will commence at approximately 1:30 p.m. If earlier agenda items run longer than anticipated and the tour is delayed, a Conservancy staff person will be at the first tour stop to advise the public.

The tour will highlight how Conservancy lands support regional priorities such as walkable and bikeable communities, affordable housing, and environmental restoration. The Conservancy invites members of the public to attend the tour (transportation is not provided). Potential sites include:

Sugar Pine Village – 1029 Tata Lane, South Lake Tahoe. This portion of the tour will convene in front of the City of South Lake Tahoe Development Services Department, located at 1052 Tata Lane. Parking is available along Tata Lane between Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Delta Street.

Knox Johnson and Motel 6 Property – 940 Sunset Drive, South Lake Tahoe. This portion of the tour will convene around the corner from 940 Sunset Drive, at the west end of Ponderosa Street, and the start of the South Tahoe Bikeway.

The tour will walk along the South Tahoe Bikeway, crossing the Upper Truckee River to the former Motel 6 site (3275 Lake Tahoe Boulevard), and then will return to the start of the South Tahoe Bikeway. Parking is available along Ponderosa Street between Sunset Drive and the west end of Ponderosa Street. Parking is not permitted at 3275 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
