New parking lot, trails planned for old Elk's Club Lodge area near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The property that once housed the Elk's Club in Meyers and was home to years of flea markets is on the next agenda for the California Tahoe Conservancy. On Thursday, June 15, the Board will consider spending up to $1,200,000 on water quality improvements and creating better access to trails and the Upper Truckee River by reconstructing the parking lot and trail connections.

The Conservancy's Elks Club property is located along the Upper Truckee River near U.S. Highway 50 on Elks Club Road in El Dorado County and is a popular recreation hub for people accessing the river and nearby trail networks.

If the Board gives the staff its blessing at the meeting which begins at 9:20 a.m., they will improve water quality by removing the eroding, old parking lot and replacing it with new asphalt above the river flood zone. The new parking area will also include best management practices to infiltrate stormwater runoff. These improvements will make the site more resilient to the extreme precipitation events expected with climate change. The Conservancy will also improve access and parking, including fully accessible trail connections, near the river and neighboring public lands, as well as restrooms. This investment builds on significant recent work by El Dorado County on the same property that has already improved water quality, habitat, and public access. ADA trails were previously constructed in the area.
