Pony Express rides again! Riders to come through South Lake Tahoe Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 750 horseback riders are crossing the United States from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California as part of the annual Pony Express Re-Ride. Riders will be coming through South Lake Tahoe Wednesday evening, changing at Stateline before heading out on Pioneer Trail to the west.

They are also carrying mail in their mochilla, the leather carrier used to hold the mail used during 18 months of the Pony Express. About 1,000 letters are transported annually during the historic re-rides.

The Pony Express has fascinated Americans since its first riders hit the leather in April 1860. It traveled 1,966 miles between Missouri and California in 10 days or less. This innovative mail service lasted only 19 months, but won a permanent place in the history of the American West.

The re-ride stays close to the original trail and as close to ten days as possible.

People can catch a glimpse of the ride as they make their way through Western Nevada, Lake Tahoe and El Dorado county on Wednesday and early Thursday. The end of the ride is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Sacramento.
