SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - The U-12 South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC) Coyotes took first place at Come Up For Air (CUFA) by defeating Sporting Santa Clara 2-1 in Sunday’s championship game at South Tahoe High School. The Coyotes defeated Sporting earlier in the tournament, 4-2, and also defeated Battle Born FC (3-0) and the Orchard Valley Toros (2-1).
Coached by head coach Jose Del Rio and assistants Jose Diaz and Juan Castaneda, the Coyotes are made up of sixth and seventh-graders and have amassed an 18-4-1 record this season.
The STFC Challengers won all four of their games and outscored their opponents 12-2 to win the U-19 bracket. Made up of high school-aged players and coached by Francisco Avina, they didn’t allow a goal in their last three games at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). This was the team’s 10th CUFA appearance since the team formed, and they’ve won it three times and finished second twice.
At the girls’ tournament the previous weekend, the U-15 STFC Tough team defeated Southern California’s Encinitas Express 2-1 in the championship game at LTCC. To reach the final, the team beat Sonoma County Premier, 2-1, and Ajax United, 1-0, and also tied Chico 2-2.
Coached by Jeremy Evans, also head coach of the LTCC men’s and women’s teams, the 09 girls are made up of eighth and ninth graders.
CUFA was held over two weekends this year and attracted more than 180 teams from around the western United States.
