Could this be the answer to overflowing trash cans in South Lake Tahoe?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Trash is an ongoing issue in communities around Lake Tahoe. No matter how many times the trash cans and dumpsters are picked up on busy days, there is garbage waiting to fill them.

South Lake Tahoe is experimenting with what could be a game-changer in the world of trash - solar powered trash compactors.

Four EC-ecube Labs Clean Cube 240L Receptacles have been installed ahead of the busy 4th of July weekend, two at Lakeview Commons on the upper plaza, and two at Conelley Beach behind the Beach Retreat.

The front of the new cans have an image that lights up to show how full they are. Once they are full the trash compaction starts and the image goes back to partially full. Also, there is a foot pedal so you don’t have to touch the handle to open it.

Sensors in the cans will then alert those in charge of trash when the can is full.

These new cans don't come cheap, with a price tag of $2,326 each. The City was able to negotiate a deal with Bay Area Trash Compactor and half-price to purchase the four units. The City did look at leasing first, but it would end up costing much more than if purchased, according to the South Lake Tahoe Director of Parks and Recreation, Lauren Thomaselli. The Bay Area company also promised them to be installed prior to the holiday.

If they work well, the City might be looking to purchase more of them.
