East Fork Fire at 1,136 acres, 45% contained

Saturday Update: As of this afternoon all established containment lines around the East Fork Fire are holding. There was no visible smoke on the most recent fly over. Crews continue to check and secure containment lines and are expected to be on scene for a few more days. The East Fork Fire has burned 1,136 acres and is now 45 percent contained.
The East Fork Fire is burning approximately 15 miles due east of Woodfords and 15 miles due south of Gardnerville on the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt -Toiyabe National Forest. The fire, ignited by lightning on Thursday July, 1 is burning in the steep rugged terrain of Cottonwood Canyon near Horseshoe Bend on the East Fork of the Carson River.
Please stay out of the area of Horseshoe Bend on the East Fork of the Carson River, where firefighters are working. The public is the first line of defense in preventing wildfires. Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest fire management and firefighters thank you for recreating responsibly and using extra precaution to prevent wildfires.
Closures: Airport Road off of Highway 89 in Alpine County is closed between the junction of Highway 89 and Diamond Valley Road. Access to Indian Creek Reservoir is closed until further notice. Do not launch any rafts or watercraft in the East Fork of the Carson River from Markleeville. There is fire on both sides of the river.
ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The East Fork Fire is now measured at 1,000 acres and is 15 percent contained. The lightning caused fire started on July 1 at about 3:00 p.m. It is burning in Cottonwood Canyon east of Woodfords and south of Gardnerville.
The fire received a good amount of rain last night. Firefighters are taking advantage of the favorable humid conditions this morning. Their is a large spot fire, outside the main containment lines, where they are focusing their efforts. The strategy remains to continue using aerial support to cool down the edges of the fire and strengthen the lines on the ground in this very rugged and inaccessible terrain.
Yesterday afternoon a storm cell passed over the area of the East Fork Fire. Strong winds caused the fire to become active on all sides. Although retardant and handlines on the northern and western edges of the fire held the fire through the wind event today, the fire moved further east up the Carson River corridor. Additional crews and overhead support are expected to arrive to tomorrow.
