Week-long Heat Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin that will be in effect until 10 a.m. Friday, July 12.

While Lake Tahoe Basin will not be into the 100s like Western Nevada and much of California, officials are warning that the high elevation combined with low humidity and high temperatures have created the advisory. There is a prolonged period of Moderate to Major Heat Risk and heat health impacts for those sensitive to heat or those without access to effective cooling.

The advisory if for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Surprise Valley, Lassen-Eastern Plumas-Eastern Sierra Counties, and Mono County.

Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during prolonged heat events, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. The annual American Century Championship is at Edgewood Tahoe this week, so stay hydrated and wear a hat if walking the course. Even if not outdoors, drink plenty of fluids.
