Series of aftershocks after 6.0 quake 20 miles south of Topaz Lake

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A long, rolling earthquake Thursday afternoon startled people for miles around the epicenter about 12 miles south of Topaz Lake/20.5 miles south of Markleeville.
Golfing fans and those on the course over at Edgewood were all caught off guard, not expecting to feel an earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says the 3:49 earthquake was a 6.0 magnitude, the University of Nevada Reno seismology lab logged it at 5.8 m.
As of 6:30 p.m., there have been 58 aftershocks, the largest a 4.5 magnitude.
The Lake Tahoe region has experience several earthquakes over the last few months, but those were all centered on the Tahoe fault that has its southern most edge off shore from Glenbrook.
Caltrans had to detour traffic on U.S. 395 from the Nevada state line to State Route 182 in Bridgeport for awhile after the initial earthquake. Maintenance crews had to remove fallen rocks loosened by the jolt.
