July 21 at the Minden Mill at 1 p.m. - A Chautauqua Performance of William Lewis Manly-“Into the Jaws of Hell.” David Woodruff assumes the character of William Lewis Manley in a dramatic and heroic tale of how stranded, forlorn, and desperate men, women, and children, endured unfathomable hardships to keep their families alive - and christened the chilling name upon their fateful location, Death Valley in 1849. July 28 at the Minden Mill at 1 p.m. - “Reflections of Lake Tahoe.” Using extensive research and seldom-seen photographs, local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff take a look back at the many people and events that have affected this magnificent Sierra Nevada gem over the years. From the industrial powerhouse of the Comstock Lode to the many efforts to create a Lake Tahoe National Park, the varied tales of “Big Blue’s” history are unique, interesting, and often amusing. Aug 1 at the Gold Hill Hotel in Gold Hill at 6:30 PM - Chautauqua presentation of Lucky Baldwin and his daughter Anita in, “An Unconventional Success.” “Lucky,” was one of the greatest pioneers of Nevada and California business. Earning a fortune in speculating on mining stocks of the Great Comstock Lode, Baldwin owned over 8,000 acres of Lake Tahoe, including some of the Lake’s only remaining old-growth forest (Tallac Historic Site and Fallen Leaf Lake). Nicknamed “Lucky” due to his extraordinary good fortune in several business deals, he also survived being shot two different times by jilted lovers. His daughter Anita inherited his shrewd business acumen, overseeing the development of the family’s 45,000 acres in Southern California into the towns of Arcadia and Monrovia, and building the famous Santa Anita Racetrack. August 4 at the Minden Mill at 1 PM - “Scandalous Tales of Misdeeds, Misconduct and Transgressions.” ‘Crime does not pay’… But it certainly has generated many unusual tales of human foibles and transgressions…even here in our usually placid environs. From the outrageous to the improbable, we’ll delve in to some of the more unusual and interesting stories. Seating is limited for this program and advance reservations are required.
