Firefighters made significant progress on the Tamarack Fire overnight and it is now 45 percent contained. Evacuations have been lifted for nearly 2,000 people, and US-395 and SR-88 have both reopened.
1,623 personnel remain on the lightning-caused fire which is now 67,764 acres, a gain of about 1,000 acres.
SR-89 is still closed, though open to residents only, in both directions from CA-88 to US-395 in California. Highway 4 is closed over Ebbett's Pass.
Conditions will be similar today compared to Sunday with light winds during the day and moderate west-southwest winds late this afternoon and this evening. Fire behavior today will be dependent on erratic winds from forecast thunderstorms. Rapid rates of growth are possible if the fire gets a direct hit from thunderstorm outflow winds.
Smoke from the Dixie Fire burning northwest of Lake Tahoe near Lake Almanor will once again affect the region due to light winds not strong enough to push it on. The Dixie Fire. The areas affected the most will be around Reno and the Carson Valley though parts of the Lake Tahoe Basin will be in the "unhealthy" range. The Dixie Fire is 197,487 acres and 22 percent contained and is generating a lot of smoke.
