South Lake Tahoe man one of three killed during brawl at Ely State Prison

Twenty-two-year-old Connor Brown of South Lake Tahoe man has been identified as one of three men killed during an altercation at Ely State Prison on Tuesday. The Nevada Department of Corrections also identified inmate Zackaria Luz, and the name of the third person has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

Brown was 18 when he was arrested for stabbing a gas station worker in the face and another man during a robbery in downtown Reno in August 2020. He was found guilty and sentenced to seven to 20 years for robbery with the use of a deadly weapon, with a deadly weapon enhancement. He'd been in prison since 2021.

Luz, 42, was serving seven to 18 years for racketeering. He had been sentenced out of Clark County and imprisoned since Oct. 5, 2023.

A spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Corrections said the brawl broke out on July 30 at the prison in eastern Nevada leaving three dead and nine others injured.

No officers were injured. Nine offenders were transported for treatment.

The investigation remains active. Ely State Prison remains on lockdown as of Wednesday afternoon.
