Truckee Tahoe Airport District cancels 2021 Air Show due to fatal crash

TRUCKEE, Calif. - The Truckee Tahoe Airport District has canceled the 2021 Air Show & Family Festival originally scheduled for September 11, 2021.

"This decision was reached in an effort to assist those in our community, as well as airport staff recovering from the tragic aircraft accident of July 26, 2021," said Kevin Smith, general manager of the Truckee Tahoe Airport District. "In an abundance of caution, as well as respect for those most affected by the accident, the Airport District Board and Airport Staff agree that the cancelation of the 2021 Air Show is in the best interest of the community and District."

Six people died in the crash of a Bombardier CL 600 jet as the pilot was attempting to land at the airport north of Lake Tahoe, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane burst into flames after it crashed in a heavily wooded area near the Ponderosa Golf Course.

"The District would like to thank all those who put forth so much time and effort into preparing for this annual event including the Truckee Optimist Club, KidZone Museum, and the local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1073 for all their efforts and understanding," said Smith.

The airshow was to be a day of remembrance on 9-11.
