Introduction to Prescribed Fire workshop in South Lake Tahoe

Event Date:
August 12, 2023 - 9:00am

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado Amador Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) is hosting a workshop on August 12 in South Lake Tahoe to introduce landowners to the use of prescribed fire on private lands and the burn planning process.

The El Dorado Amador PBA would like to invite interested landowners to a prescribed burn planning workshop at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd on Saturday, August 12, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The workshop will provide a basic introduction to fire behavior and prescribed fire, with no prior experience necessary.

The day will be focused on providing information that will aid landowners in managing their forest and ranchlands with low-intensity, low-complexity intentional fire. The workshop will provide an overview of prescribed fire and its role, permitting and liability constraints, fuel and weather monitoring, development of burn plans, personal protective equipment, and working with neighbors. It will also include a field trip to visit a prescribed burn unit nearby. No igniting or burning will occur during this workshop.

The El Dorado Amador PBA is a community organization made up of local residents working to support other private landowners to conduct prescribed burns on their own properties. The goal of the PBA is to expand the capacity within the community to conduct safe and ecologically beneficial burns on private lands, through sharing and exchange of equipment, knowledge, and support. They are in South Lake Tahoe to connect with the local community.

The El Dorado Amador PBA was formed in late 2021 and received funding for coordination from the California Department of Conservation’s Regional Forest and Fire Capacity Program in May of 2022. The PBA has hosted numerous educational workshops and field days throughout the counties and assisted landowners from Volcano to Georgetown in planning and hosting volunteer-led prescribed burns to reduce fuels, manage invasive species, and improve forage. Nearly 200 people have attended various educational events and over 100 people have gained access to live fire experience.

The workshop is free but space is limited so please register online at bit.ly/SLTworkshop.

Lunch will be available for purchase at the event for $10.
