Douglas County Sheriff’s Office joins forces in Pedestrian Safety Campaign

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be joining forces with participating law enforcement agencies in Nevada for a Joining Forces Pedestrian Safety Campaign. The campaign will take place from August 7-31, 2024.

Nevada had 109 pedestrian fatalities in 2023. This Pedestrian Safety Campaign aims to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible patrols across the State of Nevada to educate both pedestrians and drivers about road safety.

"Ensuring the safety of our pedestrians is one of our top priorities here in Douglas County,” said Sheriff Dan Coverley. “We urge all drivers to remain vigilant and respectful of crosswalks, and for pedestrians to stay aware of their surroundings. Together, we can create a safer community for everyone.”

Pedestrian reminders:

-Walk on sidewalks whenever possible or as far to the side of the road as possible.
-Cross at crosswalks or intersections.
-Between dusk and dawn, wear bright clothing or accessories that can be seen at night.
-Don’t be distracted by your phone, keep your eyes on the road.

Motorist reminders:

-Put the phone down and watch out for pedestrians.
-Driving a few miles over the speed limit might not feel like a big deal, but in a collision with a pedestrian, it can be the difference between life and death.
-Make eye contact with pedestrians waiting to cross the street.
-Take extra care while driving around schools, playgrounds, and neighborhoods
