Caltrans work in South Lake Tahoe this summer preparing for larger safety project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Contractors with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have been working along US50 (Lake Tahoe Blvd.) this summer as part of a two-year lighting and safety improvement project between the "Y" and Pioneer Trail.

Work started in June on installing the needed conduit, and the project is scheduled to be completed by October 2025. At various times there will continue to be lane restrictions on US50.

This project will:

Install new lighting - all lights will be dark sky-compliant (reduces light pollution that diminishes the view of the stars at night)
Four new crosswalks will be constructed with flashing beacons
A new signal at the intersection of Johnson Blvd. and US 50

The entire distance between the "Y" and Pioneer Trail will receive green bike lane treatment to enhance safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The project was proposed on January 22, 2021, and is funded by $1.68 million in State funds and $15.12 in Federal funding.
