State Senator representing South Lake Tahoe switches from Democratic to Republican Party

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - First-term State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil has announced she is switching her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican. Alvarado-Gil represents South Lake Tahoe and the rest of California's 4th State Senate District. The district encompasses the northeastern portion of the Central Valley, along with the central Sierra Nevada and all of Death Valley. It includes Stanislaus, Calaveras, Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Alpine, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Madera, Mono, and Inyo

“Since I’ve served in our state’s capitol, I’ve had a front-row seat to witness the supermajority push California in the wrong direction, having a grave effect on our once golden state,” Senator Alvarado-Gil said in a statement. “I cannot stand by a party that ignores the will of the people and disregards the core American values that my very community supports and believes in."

What appears to have been the last straw, two retail theft bills she was supporting had amendments added to the legislation without her knowledge. She has since revoked support from those bills.

Alvarado-Gil represents over one million people in 13 counties, much of them mostly rural.

The current demographics in Alvarado-Gil's district are 37.27 percent Republican, 33.88 percent Democratic, and 21.38 percent with no party preference.

In 2022 she beat out a crowded field of seven opponents. The daughter of immigrants spoke to voters with her background in schools and healthcare organizations.
