Wienermobile makes weekend-long stop in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1936 the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has been driving around to promote their "German-style Wieners," first through the streets of Chicago and today, around the country. Today's version of the hot dog-shaped vehicle is much bigger than the original 13-foot metal hot dog on wheels.

The little moving hotdog is now a 27-foot-long frankfurter atop a yellow bun. A peek inside shows the six seats in a fun and funky display.

There are six Wienermobiles traveling the countryside at any given time, and the colorful red-orange and yellow moving hot dog made a stop at the Ski Run Farmer's Market in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, the first of three scheduled weekend stops.

On Saturday, the Weinermobile stopped at the KOA Campground in Meyers, and on Sunday it will be at the Holiday Market in Meyers from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fans can stop by, talk to its two drivers, and maybe even get a wiener whistle!

Matthew Bailey, a recent graduate of Kennesaw State University in Georgia, and Ellie O'Donnell, a recent graduate of the University of Alabama, signed a one-year contract to tour in the unique mode of transportation. The "hotdoggers" chat with fans, distribute wiener whistles, and put a lot of smiles on the faces of communities they pass through.

Chat with the duo, and you'll hear some hot dog buns, er, puns, something you'll relish for some time. The inside is big enough for lodging, but Matthew says then it would be a Wienerbago. If the Weinermobile got pulled over, would the driver face a misdewiener or just get grilled by the cops? Your Wienermobile going a bit slow? Perhaps it needs to ketchup since it's not cutting the mustard?

Okay, how many have started to sing the Oscar Mayer jingle?

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener,
That is what I'd truly like to be-ee-ee.
'Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener,
Everyone would be in love with me.
