Kudos: US Forest Service team hosts Bread and Broth meal

U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) employees were the Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsor for Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on August 12. Normally, the men and women of LTBMY spend their time managing vegetation, restoring ecosystems, reducing fire hazards, and maintaining forest health in the South Lake Tahoe Basin. However, at the Monday Meal dinner, their primary focus was to provide a hot, nutritious meal and bags of food to help meet the needs of their fellow community members.

Emily Barnett, Kyle Haugh, Rob Lorens, and Clint Rusing represented their fellow LTBMU team members.

Arriving at St. Theresa Grace Hall at 3 p.m., the AAD volunteer team members were immediately assigned tasks to ready the hall for the upcoming meal service at 4 p.m. The typical preparations for the dinner include preparing the utensils, bagging the fresh fruit and vegetables for “giveaways,” arranging the giveaway tables with milk, eggs, butter, meat, breads and pastries, and various donated food staples, and setting up the dessert and drink table.

At 4 p.m., when Grace Hall’s doors were opened, the LTBMU AAD crew members manned the serving line to dish out the evening’s meal of BBQ ribs, coleslaw, French fries, and a summer vegetable medley. It was a busy evening as 112 happy and appreciative dinner guests were served.

“It’s been wonderful to look out at the crowd of people eating and knowing that I helped somebody in need today,” exclaimed Kyle as he took a break from the serving line.

Ending their meal’s sponsorship service by helping with the meal’s takedown and clean up, the US Forest Service AAD crew members were happy and humbled by their volunteer experience. Thank you to the evening’s AAD crew and to all of the members of the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Management Unit for your dedication to the health and well-being of our forests and grasslands and those in need in our community.
