Douglas County Search and Rescue looking for new team members

The Douglas County Search and Rescue (DCSAR) is looking for physically fit and energetic individuals to participate in its fall academy and join it’s highly qualified team. DCSAR is comprised of approximately 50 trained volunteer members within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

DCSAR is accredited by the Mountain Rescue Association and responds to high/low angle rope rescue events, reports of lost or injured backcountry snowshoeing, skiing snowmobiling and hiking incidents. The volunteers also handle fire evacuations, river or flood rescues and lost or overdue off road drivers. Any previous experience in any of this areas are useful, but not a requirement to attend the fall academy and joining this highly skilled team. They also have a Canine Team to assist in locating lost subjects.

Last year, DCSAR responded to 51 incidents in Douglas County, and have received requests from surrounding counties to assist them in their rescues due to the high level of skill the Douglas County team possesses. Participating on a backcountry SAR team requires a considerable commitment but is tremendously rewarding when a life is saved. Members typically contribute approximately 200 hours a year of volunteer time, though those that elect to participate in technical specialties may contribute more.

Anyone who enjoys the outdoors, is over 18 year of age and has a desire to serve their community in times of emergency should consider applying to the DCSAR team. Comprehensive training is provided to ensure all members are safe and capable.
