SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Getting and maintaining fire insurance has become incredibly difficult in areas likely to be affected by wildfires such as Lake Tahoe. This is an important and relevant issue. Consumers have an opportunity to provide input to the California Department of Insurance, (CDI) regarding new regulations that could ensure more insurance options for communities, like ours, in high fire risk zip codes.
For this reason, the Al Tahoe Firewise Community would like to invite you to an important meeting on August 22, 2024, at the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Training Center featuring Outreach Specialist, Mary Bykowsky from the California Department of Insurance. She will provide updates on Insurance Commissioner Lara’s proposed "Sustainable Insurance Strategy" policy and what it means for those living in identified Distressed Areas.
The event will take place in the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Training Center at 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd. from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Following Ms. Bykowsky’s initial policy overview, and presentations by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jim Drennan and Fire Marshal Kim George, there will be a Q and A session. Important issues to be discussed include a proposal to increase the number of policies written in the fire distressed regions, and Catastrophe Modeling and Defensible Space Mitigation and Inspections, and how these issues impact insurance rates. Phillip Irwin, a California FAIR Plan Public Relations Representative, will have an opportunity to address the audience, and respond to questions and concerns.
Your voice matters in developing the proposed CDI regulations that will have a major impact on insurance acquisition and rates in the future. On September 17, 2024, CDI will hold a virtual public hearing where your input is encouraged to shape future policies.
Space is limited for the Aug. 22 event. Please RSVP to altahoefirewise@gmail.com.
